A diploma or certificate from a recognized trade, technical or vocational school with a major in carpentry, woodworking or cabinetmaking. At leasst six years of progressive experience in maintenance, alteration and repair of buildings, or in the fabrication of a variety of wooden articles and equipment.

Position Overview

Primary Purpose of Position

Carpenter performs general carpentry (alterations, construction, repair, replace and installations), painting and plastering in administrative offices, academic and auxiliary buildings and at the university farm.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to: repairs building frameworks and structures—such as stairways, door frames, window frames, moldings, partitions, and rafters—made from wood and other materials; install/replace/paint cabinets, siding, and drywall; follow blueprints and building plans; measure, cut, or shape wood, plastic, and other materials; construct building frameworks, including walls, floors, and door frames; inspect and replace damaged framework or other structures and fixtures.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit

The Physical Plant is responsible for providing services relative to buildings and grounds maintenance, utilities, transportation, trash removal, central receiving, recycling, disposition of surplus property and moving and hauling. In addition the Physical Plants expanding responsibilities include providing support services for the instruction and research programs to achieve the University’s mission, goals and objectives. Maintain, improve and expand all campus buildings, campus image and educational opportunities for all people. More specifically, the functions involve energy conservation, building renovation/repair, occupational safety and health, landscape design, event planning, vehicle and equipment maintenance/repair, motor pool and housekeeping services to 126 academic buildings, ten residences and seven farm buildings. Moreover, the Skilled Trades Department is responsible for repair, maintenance and preventive maintenance of campus facilities.

Work Hours M-F, 7am-4pm; rotates on call/call backs; essential staff-required to report during adverse weather (ice, snow, storms, etc.)

Required Competency Knowledge - Technical
Duties

1. Remove, repair, replace (hang/rehang) doors, mort door hinges, door screens.
2. Plane doors, lumber and furniture to fit; route room and door signs and install. Affix room numbers and names on doors.
3. Replace ceiling tile and floor tile; test floor and ceiling tile for asbestos properties; modify ceilings in special areas to carry heavy weight equipment.
4. Insulate walls, doors, floors, ceilings and windows with fiberglass rolled insulation, weather strips or caulking.
5. Repair, replace and or install window panes and panels, glazed windows, window cranks, arms and other mechanical parts, window shades and blinds (cut, repair and modify as needed).
6. Maintain greenhouse roof and replace broken roof glass; install air circulation fans in greenhouse walls.
7. Install baseboards, safety equipment, special equipment (i.e., basketball goals, hospital beds, weight machines, security screens, mirrors, countertops and clocks); hang bulletin boards, install score boards,
chalk boards, top deck speakers, and tack boards.
8. Plan, build/construct/repair and install bookcases in offices and classrooms, decks, hand rails, stages, steps and stoops, ramps; special event backgrounds, wood displays, directional signs and display stands.
9. Remodel offices, install metal stub walls.
10. Repair and replace bath stalls, locks and hardware; shower wall kits, curtain rods and sliding doors.
11. Repair, replace and or install bleachers, safety equipment, goal post and mark off football field in athletic facilities.
12. Repair/remake and reinstall beds, bookcases, chairs, desks, drawers, formica countertops, lab marble tops microwave stands, shelves for storage space, sink tops, wall lockers, etc.
13. Assemble and install computer terminals, desks and arms.
14. Install, repair and replace roll up chain-operated doors and chain operated roof vents on greenhouses, flag pole chains.
15. Emergency maintenance and repairs – remove commodes from back up in emergencies; shut-off water valve and gas valve in an emergency; finish sheet rock and cut and lay carpet during an emergency; and provide backup manpower to the other skill trade shops and the University.
16. Build and erect barriers for safety, partitions and leaf truck bodies, as specified.
17. Repair and install Plexiglas panels, projector screens and musical speakers at high elevations.
18. Remove and replace sheet rock and cinder block walls and brick; layout playground stationary rides, toys, swings, exercise and body tone apparatus for fitness and install as specified.
19. Repair and replace fence post, gates, hinges, farm and yard tools, equipment and trash can holders.
20. Repair and replace buffer brush pads, band trucks, ladders, coat racks, door stoppers, file cabinets and office, classroom and dormitory furniture.
21. Lay concrete sidewalks, pour concrete pads for steps and patch and pour concrete to a rough finish, as necessary. Build forms for pouring concrete and install.
22. Install drain pipe in ditch (when called upon to do so).
23. Perform some tasks with contractor as outlined by supervisor.
24. Paint & Plaster – Fill nail holes and cracks; spackle or plaster all defective areas; sands smooth repaired areas flush with existing walls; apply plaster skillfully; install metal laft; apply scratch coat; brown coat and finish coat; apply finishes in accordance with existing areas. Apply primers, stains and varnishes; sprays, rolls and brushes painted and unpainted surfaces; trim windows, doors, ceilings and sidewalls; paints cove base.
25. Truck – Drive trucks. Check fluid levels and tires daily. Refill truck gas tanks at the one quarter gas gauge indicator mark. Rotate driving assignments as listed on the driving roster. Inspect first aid kit and fire extinguisher located in the truck and replenish as necessary.

Duties

Wear safety shoes and other appropriate safety gear at all times. Attend safety training sessions. Observe lock out/tag out regulations. Report on the job injuries to the supervisor at the time they occur and provide correct and accurate information to supervisor. Complete accident reports and seek immediate medical attention for on the job injuries. Operate vehicles and tools of the trade safety.

Required Competency Problem Solving
Duties

Locate and install old obsolete and hard to find parts, tools, equipment and supplies. When serving on-call, perform necessary task to make emergency callbacks safe and secure until later completion of task; calling for assistance or inform supervisor is other trade assistance required.

Duties

Mark, cut, and shape materials to prescribed measurements. Perform minor drafting and sketches; read blue prints and modify where necessary. Check and recheck work for accuracy.
Report job injuries to supervisor, seek medical attention and complete accident report immediately.
Fill out all work orders completely and turn in to supervisor at end of same day job is completed.
Perform inventory of tools/materials/stock inventory (assigned and checked out), properly recording and tracking daily use.
Maintain contact with Radio Base Station – calling in all job locations and motor travel.
Inform supervisor and file a police report for vehicle accidents, lost or stolen tools and equipment.
