Five or more years of related experience in news and promotional writing for a newspaper, magazine, public relations agency/office or similar environment. Familiarity with higher education administration a plus. Fluency in Spanish a plus.

Position Overview

Primary Purpose of Position

The Staff Writer, under the supervision of the Director of University Communications, will develop, write, edit and proofread a variety of informational print and electronic materials (e.g., news and feature stories, advertisements, special communications, publications, programs, news releases and social media posts) through a variety of communication channels (e.g., print, broadcast, Web), to stimulate interest in programs, events and activities.

Work involves researching topics; interviewing sources; writing and editing news and informational materials; preparing and disseminating news releases and feature stories through various media outlets; public relations activities that involve directing a broad communications program; developing and managing print, electronic, broadcast and/or Web-based content; and leading/directing staff when appropriate. Work also involves developing and recommending communication strategies and initiating, developing and maintaining working relationships with key internal and external individuals and organizations, and other duties as assigned.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit

The Office of University Relations is administered under the Office of the Chancellor of North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. University Relations is the central communications office for North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University that is responsible for marketing, branding, crisis communications, media relations and other major elements of identification and communications for the university. The office works with colleges/schools and units across the university to promote news, information and events that align with the institution’s strategic priorities and brand positioning. Duties

Plan and research topics for publications, special communications, news releases and Web content; interview sources. Develop, write and edit feature, news and informational materials (e.g., news and feature articles, news releases, advertisements, special communications, publications, programs). Analyze and edit information prepared internally (e.g., by department colleagues, other university employees, students) and externally (e.g., by alumni, education/business partners, stakeholders/constituents). Disseminate news and information.

Duties

Use excellent oral communication skills, interpersonal communication skills and listening skills to conduct interviews and to gather and relay information to audiences with different levels of education. Use excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills to complete assignments. Use correct English grammar and comply with the university’s editorial guidelines. Develop content/prepare messages for social media posts. Establish and maintain working relationships with internal and external individuals/groups. Provide training and oversight.

Required Competency Knowledge - Technical
Duties

Use a variety of office, computer and photographic equipment (e.g., copiers and printers, telephones, desktop/laptop computers, tablets, digital cameras, calculators) and software/applications (e.g., Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, social media), as well as research, identify, recommend and integrate new technology. Use creativity and skill in planning and completing work assignments. Post content (e.g., written copy, image files) in a variety of social media applications. Provide training and oversight of new methods and tools. Drive a variety of noncommercial passenger motor vehicles.
