Position Overview

Primary Purpose of Position

The Program Coordinator will work in partnership with the AgrAbility Project and North Carolina Agromedicine Institute faculty to develop and lead collaborative and synergistic research, Extension and academic efforts to identify and address the health and safety risks of farmers, their families and communities. The coordinator will provide leadership for the NC AgrAbility Project including oversight of the federal grant award and supervision of project staff and graduate students. This position is responsible for the development of a strong extramurally-funded research and Extension agenda, centered around a high priority, high impact theme or in a closely related emerging area of interest and need in the field of agricultural occupational and environmental health and safety. The coordinator is responsible for the maintenance and expansion of efforts to fulfill the goals of the NC Agromedicine Institute and AgrAbility project. This position will contribute to the development, implementation, and evaluation of a comprehensive research based educational programming agenda that meets the needs of limited-resource and socially-disadvantaged, small farmers consistent with the vision, mission, and goals of the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit

North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University is one of America’s highly-respected universities, focused on interdisciplinary research, creative scholarship, exemplary undergraduate and graduate instruction, and community service and engagement.

The College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences (CAES) has four distinct but inter-related departments (Agribusiness, Applied Economics, and Agriscience Education; Animal Science; Family and Consumer Sciences; and Natural Resources and Environmental Design). The CAES has three institutes and centers of excellence: Center for Excellence for Post-Harvest Technologies, International Trade Center, Waste Management Institute and one interdisciplinary Center for Bioenergy. To complement the academic programs in the college, the CAES has an Agricultural Research Program; Cooperative Extension Program; University Teaching and Research Farm; Child Development Laboratory; and Laboratory Animal Research Unit.

The CAES Agricultural Research Program actively engages in research projects that reflect the 1890 land-grant university mission to serve agricultural industries, communities and individuals, with a strong emphasis on research that serves small and limited-resource farms, businesses, rural communities and families in North Carolina.

The Cooperative Extension Program at N.C. A&T is an educational outreach organization within the CAES. Cooperative Extension at A&T provides researched-based educational information, programming and technical assistance to limited-resource audiences that address a diverse range of issues in four programmatic areas – Agriculture and Natural Resources, Family and Consumer Sciences, Community and Rural Development, and 4-H Youth Development.

The North Carolina AgrAbility Partnership (NC AgrAbility) is a federally-funded grant program through the U.S. Department of Agriculture National Institute for Food Safety (USDA-NIFA). The program consists of a National Project and individually funded state or regional projects. The mission of NC AgrAbility is to educate and assist farmers, ranchers, farmworkers and their family members engaged in production agriculture who are living with disabilities to enable them to stay actively engaged in production agriculture, agriculture-related occupations, and/or daily life.

The North Carolina Agromedicine Institute is a University of North Carolina inter-institutional institute whose partners are East Carolina University, North Carolina State University, and North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. In addition to our university partners, the Institute relies heavily on its collaborative partnerships with the agricultural community, other universities, businesses, health care organizations, governmental agencies, and non-governmental organizations who are dedicated to identifying and addressing the health and safety risks of farmers, their families and communities in North Carolina.

Minimum Requirements

Master’s degree required from an accredited university in agriculture, rehabilitation engineering, industrial design, rural sociology, public health, environmental health or some other related fields.
Three or more years of work experience with vocational rehabilitation industries or some other related agriculture field.
Knowledge of agricultural, small family businesses and farm machinery.
Computer literacy (proficiency in MS Excel, PowerPoint and Office, etc.; experience with statistical analysis software preferred).
Strong oral and written communication skills as well as strong interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated experience with planning, implementing, marketing, and evaluating educational programs.
Ability to handle multiple demands and set priorities.
Experience with grant writing and project management.
Experience with program reporting and successful proposal development.
Experience in development of training curriculum/training materials.
Experience working effectively as a team member.
Experience in recruiting and supervising volunteers.
Ability to manage time and resources.
Valid Driver’s license and personal transportation.
Ability to travel and work after hours/weekends as needed.
Candidates must be able to lift and set up displays and tables at meeting such as fairs and conferences.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

Earned PhD/EdD in in agriculture, rehabilitation engineering, industrial design, rural sociology, public health, environmental health or some other related fields.
Four more years of work experience in the delivery of case management, social education, rehabilitative and vocational services to children and adults with disabilities, their families and caregivers.
Eight to ten years of experience working in an occupation directly related to the position requirements.
