Position Overview

Primary Purpose of Position

The Project Manager provides project management for various IT projects, acting as the enabler, manager, and facilitator of the overlapping requests from the university’s internal customers. They provide leadership, oversight, coordination, and evaluation of internal customer’s changes to software/infrastructure. This position is responsible for several projects with a diverse range of scope and complexity. This includes the responsibility to direct the work of other project team members and for managing team activities to assure the best use of time and resources to meet project defined objectives and deliverables.

•Provides consultation to the project team, sponsors and other stakeholders on the strategies for moving the project forward.
•Sets and manages client expectations and ensures expectations are documented in the project plan.
•Communicates effectively with clients to identify needs and evaluate alternative business solutions.

•Builds a knowledge base of each client’s business, organization and objective.

•Clearly, succinctly and effectively conveys information and recommendations to individuals or groups in an oral or written form. Demonstrates the ability to adjust language and terminology to meet the needs of the audience. Practices the use of correct grammar, organization and structure for written documentation.
•Uses sound judgment in all project communication and ensures that key stakeholders including the team, client and management are apprised of project activities in a timely manner.
•Communicates progress, risks, expectations, time lines, milestones and other key project metrics to clients and team members.
•Ensures all necessary project documentation including metrics is maintained and is kept current and available to appropriate stakeholders.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit

The Project Management Office (PMO) provides the framework governance processes for the selection and execution of Information Technology (IT) projects that align with University strategic objectives. It provides guidance and support for project management processes and methodologies to achieve expected business benefits while minimizing risk in a manner that is efficient, consistent and standardized.

The office provides an IT project management culture to ensure that projects are delivered on time, within budget and with the expected results. The primary objective is to provide project management best practices, project transparency, standardization, and outreach services. Our goal is to strengthen project management methodologies already in place and introduce effective ways to improve project success by:
• Providing examples, templates and best practices
• Creating and reporting metrics that benefit project management planning and provide transparency to our customers.

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or closely related degree from an appropriately accredited institution; or a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Project Management or closely related degree from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of experience in IT project management or technical project management related work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

The ideal candidate will have five plus years of experience and interested in joining a diverse team in delivering strategic infrastructure projects for the University. Experience in network systems and enterprise infrastructure is desired.
