Position Overview

Primary Purpose of Position

The Department of Built Environment at North Carolina A&T State University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in the field of Environmental Health and Safety starting in August, 2018. The appointment is expected to be at the Assistant Professor level. An appointment at a higher rank may be considered for exceptionally qualified applicants. In particular, the Department is seeking qualified candidates who can develop a collaborative and innovative research program in one of the following areas: construction safety, safety and security management, accident prevention, hazardous materials; system safety; and engineering hazard controls; UAV utilization in safety. The EHS position will align with the Department and College interest in Applied Science and Technology.

The hired faculty is expected to show commitment to teaching and research excellence. She/he is expected to teach Environmental Health and Safety courses at the undergraduate and graduate level, develop courses and curricula, direct students in research and provide service to the university and community. The ideal candidate will develop and maintain a vigorous research program in Environmental Health and Safety science. Mentoring undergraduate research students is also expected as EHS majors in the department follow a curriculum where students are encouraged to be involved in research. A candidate’s teaching and research efforts will promote the mission of the Environmental Health and Safety Program and the strategic vision of the College of Science and Technology. Collaboration with colleagues from the sciences, mathematics and other technology areas is expected. Service to the Department, College and University is also a requirement for the position.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit

North Carolina A&T State University is an 1890 land-grant doctoral research university dedicated to learning, discovery and community engagement. The College of Science and Technology is research oriented and fosters academic excellence through innovative programs, critical thinking and intellectual inquiry to prepare students for the 21st century global workforce. The College plays a pivotal role in further advancing the mission of the University by emphasizing preeminence in STEM and the promotion of curricular advancement, scientific discovery and technological innovation. The College houses the departments of Applied Engineering Technology, Biology, Built Environment, Chemistry, Computer Systems Technology, Energy and Environmental Systems, Graphic Design Systems, Mathematics and Physics. The Department of Built Environment enrolls over 200 undergraduate and graduate majors. The Department offers three degree programs: a Bachelor of Science in Construction Management, Environmental Health and Safety and Geomatics. The Construction Management program is accredited by ACCE and ATMAE. EHS is accredited by ATMAE and Geomatics is accredited by ABET. In addition, the department is involved in the planning for a Ph.D. program in Applied Science and Technology.

Minimum Requirements

The candidate must have a doctoral degree in EHS or a closely related field by the anticipated date of appointment.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

Prefer at least 3 years of teaching experience and 2 years of industrial experience in EHS. Post-doctoral experience; demonstrated record of independent research and publishing.
