Position Overview

Primary Purpose of Position

The Cooperative Extension Administrator/Associate Dean will lead the institution’s educational outreach, Extension, and engagement efforts with external communities to extend and apply the organization’s knowledge, expertise, and resource capabilities to improve local, state, and regional economic interests and quality of life. The administrator’s duties also require collaborations with business, industry, government, other universities, individuals, and groups to address a wide range of issues and challenges facing the larger community especially those with limited resources.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit

The Cooperative Extension Program at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University is an educational outreach organization within the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences. Cooperative Extension at A&T provides researched-based educational information, programming and technical assistance to limited-resource audiences that address a diverse range of issues in four programmatic areas – Agriculture and Natural Resources, Family and Consumer Sciences, Community and Rural Development, and 4-H Youth Development. Together with its partners – North Carolina State University Cooperative Extension Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture, state and county governments, a dynamic and resourceful system is formed. In addition to campus operations, The Cooperative Extension Program has professionally staffed offices in almost half of the 100 counties in North Carolina and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indian Nation.

Minimum Requirements

Earned doctorate in Agriculture, or related Agricultural fields, such as Family and Consumer Sciences, Extension Education, Community Development, and Youth Development or closely related field of study with at least 7 years’ experience with Cooperative Extension in a leadership role at a federal, state and/or local level and
5 years’ of Extension experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Strong record of effective organization and administration skills with demonstrated ability to work both independently and as a team member

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

- Excellent budget management skills and experience with federal, state, local and grant funding.
- Excellent written and verbal communication, analytical and interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to lead and manage people.
- Knowledge and experience in conducting and administering Cooperative Extension programs at a state and local level
- Strong leadership, problem-solving and crisis management abilities.
- Advanced knowledge and experience in developing strong organizational relationships.
- Advanced ability to write successful grant proposals.
- Knowledge of management practices.
- Knowledge of University and U. S. Department of Agriculture policies and procedures.
- Knowledge and significant experience in working with limited resource and minority group clientele.
- Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
- Employee development and performance management skills.
- Knowledge of faculty and/or staff hiring procedures.
- Ability to develop and deliver presentations.
- Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community
